Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, collectively known as V2X, allow vehicles to exchange anonymous data between nearby vehicles as well as roadway infrastructure – enabling vehicles to sense dangers from surrounding vehicles and even roadway hazards like closed lanes. This information can be combined with integrated on-vehicle sensors and control subsystems to allow vehicles to warn drivers of hazards or even improve active safety through collision avoidance. For instance, V2X systems can pre-tension a seatbelt in the case of an imminent collision or shave fractions of a second off stopping time and feet off of braking distance.
Government mandates for V2X technology are being issued on a global scale, including North America, Europe, and Asia.
